Buick McSnake: klurich@mchsi.com
There are plenty of minimalist acts that fall into that category due to lack of creativity. That is not the case with Buick McSnake. Indeed, their material is their greatest strength. Roth’s barebones songs feature ethereal lyrics, interesting rhythms and chord changes, and catch, accessible melodies anchored by his strong tenor voice. Roth and Urich have been playing together in various incarnations since the early 80’s and recently produced a full length cd.
myspace.com/buickmcsnake
Big Joe Kinser: bigjoekinser@msn.com
Compared to the likes of Steve Earle and Daivd Alan Coe, Big Joe Kinser plays acoustic guitar driven, American Roots music. Originals or covers, he sings life into the songs he plays. ”Music and Laughter are my two favorite things” says Big Joe, who’s sense of humor extends beyond his live shows and into his song writing. A sense of humor so dry it’s been called “arid”, Big Joe started playing stand up bass in garages and living rooms with bluegrass friends around Central Iowa. He honed his vocal chops in church and guitar playing under the mentorship of Bob Pace.

Public Participation Plan Public Meeting

http://www.mercydesmoines.org/events/
The Des Moines Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) will host a public meeting to receive input and comments on updates to the Public Participation Plan (PPP). The meeting will be held at Mercy Medical Center, which is accessible via public transportation using the Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority’s #3 route.
As part of a continuous, cooperative, and comprehensive transportation planning process, the MPO solicits public review and comment on the work, projects, and products proposed and created by the MPO. The MPO’s PPP intends to promote this effort by defining a process that provides citizens, stakeholder groups, and other interested parties with reasonable opportunities to be involved in the transportation planning process. The PPP contains the MPO’s policies and procedures for conducting public outreach, scheduling public meetings, and incorporating public input into the transportation planning process.
The MPO reviews the PPP annually and evaluates the need to revise public participation strategies. Following this year’s evaluation, the MPO has revised these procedures to incorporate new and innovative ways to involve the public and ensure a full and open participation process.
The MPO staff will host the meeting using an open forum format to encourage attendees to express their views and opinions and to ask questions regarding the PPP. One may share their opinion with MPO staff in three ways: 1) orally at the meeting; 2) in writing via forms available at the meeting; or, 3) by submitting written comments to the MPO after the July 13, 2010, meeting but prior to the close of the comment period on July 16, 2010.

Regular admission

Popular children’s books, The Very Hungry Caterpillar and The Grouchy Ladybug, by author Eric Carle, have been brought to life at Des Moines Botanical & Environmental Center. Designed by Botanical Center horticulturist, Angie Buchanan, the summer gardens include a 16-foot caterpillar and larger-than-life ladybugs that greet you as you walk into the tropical Dome. Visitors will also learn about the benefits of insects as they walk through the Dome.
The Botanical Center will host an event, Buggy About Plants, on Saturday, June 6, from 12:00 to 4:00 p.m. Have fun while learning about honeybees from the USDA and butterflies from Des Moines’ Butterfly Lady, Kathy Ziemer. Enjoy hands-on activity by holding live insects from the Blank Park Zoo. Visitors can also help with the annual ladybug release in the Dome. Enjoy the creativity of AJ’s Copper Garden sculptures, including giant copper bugs and butterflies placed throughout the Botanical Center and inside the Dome.
Throughout 2010, visitors to the Des Moines Botanical & Environmental Center will be welcomed with a new horticultural and educational experience as the gardens transform throughout the year, all inspired by popular children’s stories, including Dr. Seuss, Charlie Brown and Eric Carle books.
“Story Time in the Gardens” includes seven plant bed changes in the Dome – many bringing the stories alive with life-size props – educational activities, theme-related gift shop items, Riverwalk Café menu choices and special events, all inspired by children’s books. The theme continues into the Show House, with four unique, seasonal designs, and outside to the Herb Garden which is open May through September. Please visit the Des Moines Botanical & Environmental Center throughout the year to see each new garden.
